I sometimes space my notes but mostly for effect. I try to keep my fingers off the strings behind the bar so as not to dampen them. I find it allows a fraction more of sustain and adds slight overtones created by the mixture of vibrato on both sides of the bar. If you want a softer sound, keep the fingers of the bar hand on the strings, and if you want the notes to sing a little more, lift them off.
