I lived in Los Angeles in the 70s, so I was in the premier location for funk/fusion. There are floating lines and chord groupings with the steel that would support the syncopated guitar rhythm without getting in the way, but the synthesized keyboard has that capability too, so it would be a challenge. As a soloist, I wouldn't have that problem, but sitting in and looking for holes wouldn't appeal to me. I've been a long time fan of Herbie Hancock from the Miles Davis days and appreciate John McLaughlin's work, but as a listener, I favor the more traditional bebop style jazz guitar with Pat Martino as the exception.
