The most effective way is to start the move on the ninth string. If in the key of C at the 8th fret, start at fret ten and play strings 9 and 8 on beats one and two. Let the notes ring and move back one fret and play string 7 on beat three. With the notes still ringing, move another fret down to the C position and play the 6th string on the fourth beat. When properly played, the notes in the move will be C, D, D#, E, but you'll end up with a C9th chord.
