Approach to learning a new song

Buddy I have never had the opprotunity to ask you how you approach learning a new song.Example like DEEP PURPLE, or String of Pearls. Did you read the music off of a sheet and learn the horn parts and the chord progressions, listen to the sax sections.How do you approach this may I ask.When I was younger I just figured out the parts sitting at my guitar listenning to the albums, or called you up to ask you how you did something.I know it is just alot of practice.
